About Sulfates

Have you ever heard of "Sulfates?".  Few consumers have, but sulfates are the base detergent in almost every shampoo and many body washes, yet once people learn about them, few will ever choose to wash their hair or skin with them again!

Sulfates, like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Ammonium Laurel Sulfate  are chemicals that are used to dissolve dirt and oil on surfaces like car engines, garage floors, dirty dishes and dirty laundry.  Sulfates are used because they are inexpensive and easily thickened, creating the maximum product for the minimum cost - but they should never be used on your hair or scalp!

On hair, sulfates strip protein and crack open the hair strand, resulting in dry, split, and generally unhealthy hair.  The same drying effects occur on the skin .  Many hair care products then attempt to cover up the damage through use of silicone based conditioners and/or styling products, but the damage is done and continues to be done with regular use.

How do you know if you are using these damaging chemicals on YOUR hair?  It's simple - just look on the back of your shampoo bottle and read the ingredients -  any term ending in the word "sulfate" means bad news!
